The Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt is recognized as key contributor in process improvement. They have a working knowledge of the fundamental tools necessary to drive changes in work processes. Yellow Belts are recognized subject-matter expert with an added skill in process improvement methodology.

Course Outline & Objectives


I. Introductions

  1. Understand the origins and principles of Lean and Six Sigma
  2. Describe the importance of Lean Six Sigma as an organizational strategy
  3. Identify the different roles and responsibilities
  4. Describe the different phases of the DMAIC process improvement model

II. Define Phase - Set-up the right projects right

  1. Identify opportunities for process improvement
  2. Construct a process map for capturing a business process

III. Measure Phase - Quantify the current performance

  1. Explain the purpose and importance of a Pareto Chart.
  2. Construct a Pareto Chart to prioritize process failure issues.
  3. Explain the purpose and importance of charts and summary statistics.
  4. Distinguish time-related patterns in a trend chart.
  5. Assess the performance of a process using a trend chart.
  6. Summarize process data using statistics.

IV. Analyze - Validate the sources of wastes and variations

  1. Visualize the "As-Is" process
  2. Uncover the different types of wastes

V. Improve - Achieve breakthrough performance level

  1. Utilize lean fixes to address wastes
  2. Identify and eliminate the superfluous steps in a "To-Be" Swim Lane
  3. Compare performance before and after the change

VI. Control -Sustain the new performance

  1. Implement a monitoring and response plan

*On-the-job practice: Apply concepts, techniques, and skills learned in the workplace.


Yellow Belt START-UP kit includes:

  • Total of 8 training contact hours
  • Up to 45 minutes of personalized coaching per participant (outside of the training contact hour)
  • 180-day access to Whitehall's eClassroom (soft copy of job aids, templates, and examples)


Target audience: All professionals who are currently participating, or want to contribute, in process improvement.


Certification Process

Candidates must complete the following requirements to obtain the Certified Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt credential.

  1. Complete the training course and obtain a minimum score of 80% in the knowledge checks.
  2. Submit practice exercises to demonstrate correct application of the tools on-the-job.
