Dear ECCP Members,
ECCP is at the forefront of advocating companies to go green and to adopt sustainable consumption and production practices. We encourage especially our members to reduce their ecological footprints along their supply chains. Hence, the purpose of this letter is to encourage a proper disposal and recycling of Used Lead Acid Batteries.
Used Lead-Acid Batteries, are classified as toxic and, therefore, their disposal and recycling have to be handled in accordance with Republic Act 6969, known as Toxic Substances and Hazardous and Nuclear Waste Control Act. In the Philippines, hazardous wastes are the responsibility of the generator (the soonest a vehicle generates a Used Lead-Acid Battery, the owner of the said vehicle is classified as the generator).
According to the Blacksmith Institute of New York and the Green Cross of Switzerland, the Philippines is one of the most severely affected countries by lead pollution and contamination in the World.
The informal sector which sadly still process large tonnages of Used Lead-Acid Batteries is manually breaking these Used Lead-Acid Batteries (without the benefit of Personal Protection Equipment) and releasing the sulfuric acid contaminated by lead into our environment. The lead seeps into the soil and the water which contaminates the food chain. The contaminated battery cases are then sold to plastic recyclers/ manufacturers, without any prior lead decontamination to manufacture plastic products, which end up being used in households.
From the informal sector battery recycling practices, it has been estimated by the Blacksmith Institute of New York that 15,000 people living in a town near Manila will have a collective 319,817 years lost to death, impacted by disease or disability. It is equivalent to 21 years lost or lived with a disability per person.
Just to name a few lead-poisoning consequences: Decreased IQ, Autism, Infertility, Renal damage, Hypertension, Cardiac toxicity, Nervous system disorders, and Death.
Ecoglobal Inc. is a member of the International Lead Association/London. Ecoglobal is to date the only lead battery recycling facility in the Philippines that has been assessed and passed successfully an Environmentally Sound Management inspection using the ILA’s Benchmark Assessment Tool. You may read the letter of certification and the worldwide list of ILA members here.
Ecoglobal Inc. collects, transports and recycles Used Lead-Acid Batteries in its recycling facility in the Philippines.
Ecoglobal is the only DENR accredited battery recycler which has never patronized secondary lead from the informal sector in the Philippines.
With this in mind, we would like all members to support the work being done by Ecoglobal in protecting health, safety and environment by preventing the toxic materials being disposed into the waste stream.
We recommend to have all used lead acid batteries from your company be collected by Ecoglobal for recycling. Your company will be provided with the proper containers to store the Used Lead-Acid Batteries. Once these containers are full, Ecoglobal Inc. secures all the proper permits and collects and transports these containers to its recycling facility where the Used Lead-Acid Batteries are then treated. Your company will be promptly issued the certificate of treatment once the process has been completed.
